Miami, Fla., April 2, 2020 – RRBH Law is offering free policy reviews to business interruption insurance policyholders who have experienced losses because of the coronavirus pandemic. Mandatory stay-at-home orders have shuttered businesses across the country. While necessary to protect the public health of the community, the closures have left non-essential businesses struggling. With beaches already reopening, Florida’s stay-at-home order is set to fully expire on April 30, unless Gov. Ron DeSantis extends it. However, most businesses have already experienced financial loss, and without assistance, many will be forced to close indefinitely. These current challenges that business owners face beg the question: Will business interruption insurance cover any of the losses? Insurance policies are notoriously difficult to understand, so as policyholders read their policies, they may wonder whether any of the provisions included in their policies protect them. The experienced attorneys at RRBH Law—who specialize in insurance litigation, among other areas of law—are offering their services to help policyholders understand in clear, concise language how their business interruption policies deal with the ramifications of COVID-19. The RRBH Law team is asking any business owners who have business interruption coverage to contact their office for their free policy review. To schedule …

3 Ways College Students Can Help Prevent Sexual Assault
We can all help prevent sexual assault, and as the school year starts again this fall, there is no more critical time to learn how. For college students, sexual assault is a problem that affects a large portion of students every year. Undergraduate women aged 18 to 24 are three times as likely to be a victim of sexual assault compared to the rest of the female population. If you’re a college student, learning how to intervene in situations can help keep you and your friends safe. Being an advocate and stepping in to help can make a difference, but you should only attempt to intervene if you feel comfortable. If you feel that someone’s safety is in jeopardy, including your own, call the police. Here’s what you can do to prevent sexual assault as a college student. Be Direct If you are unsure whether someone is in a situation that could lead to sexual assault, the best thing to do is ask them. Questions like “are you alright?” and “do you need me to stay with you?” can signal to the person in need as well as a predator that you’re watching. Create a Distraction Creating a distraction without …
Hurricane Preparation: It’s Time to Get Ready for the Next Irma
Hurricane preparation requires planning and some investment, but knowing that your home will be less likely to sustain damage is worth the money and effort. Here are some of the essential preparations you need to make: Secure Your Home Strap down your roof. Many homes in Florida are designed to account for hurricane strap installation. However, if your home is older, you might need to retrofit your roof so that you can take this necessary precaution and prevent damage to this integral part of your home. Install head and foot bolts on your external doors. Extra security for your home’s entrances is a good idea. These bolts will keep your doors from flying open or detaching in high winds. Purchase storm shutters. Storm shutters protect your windows from being broken by flying debris and high wind pressure. You can buy shutters that are commercially made, or you can make them yourself. Be sure to use reinforced plywood that is at least five-eighths of an inch thick. Make windows and doorways watertight. Water that seeps into your home’s structure through cracks in door jambs and window fittings can cause serious water damage. The influx of moisture into the walls can also …
Do I Have Enough Homeowners Insurance Coverage?
Determining how much homeowners insurance coverage you need can be a difficult process, but if something should happen to your home, being as accurate as possible is definitely worth the time and effort it takes. If disaster hits, you’ll want to not only have enough to rebuild the structure of your home but also to replace belongings, to cover living expenses while you rebuild, and to protect you against liability. Here’s what you need to consider when buying homeowners insurance coverage: Factors That Will Impact How Much Coverage You Need A standard policy covers things like damage from storms, fire, and explosions. If flooding and earthquakes are common to the area you live in, you’ll need to purchase additional coverage. You’ll want to make sure that the coverage you buy is adequate to completely rebuild your home. If your coverage is based on your mortgage amount—as required by some lenders—be sure that the amount is equal to or greater than the cost to rebuild. To calculate costs, do some research on the following: The total square footage of the structure (or structures if you have multiple buildings) Local construction costs Once you have these two figures, simply multiply them for …
Don’t Have Fire Insurance? According to the Experts, You Might Need it
Does homeowners insurance cover fire protection to a sufficient degree? This is a question that every homeowner needs to ask because it’s often the case that policies are inadequate for the value of the home and possessions they cover. For those who dwell near the Florida Everglades, the risk of fire damage is especially high during the dry season, and while wildfires are only a single cause of house fires, last year’s wildfires in California could foreshadow a similar event here in Florida, according to fire experts. The Example of California Damage claims from the wildfires that swept through wine country in California last October reached upwards of $9 billion, the highest in the state’s history. The dry climate—30 inches of rainfall, annually—and mountainous terrain in California made containing the blaze difficult. Florida, which receives 50 to 60 inches of rainfall per year, is less at risk for catastrophic fires, though the dry winter this year increases that risk substantially. “Florida has a Mediterranean climate much like California and probably is the most fire-prone state in the Eastern U.S.,” Jim Karels, Director of the Florida Fire Service, recently told the Orlando Sentinel. “We are going to be looking at a …
Sexual Assault Awareness Month: How You Can Help
If the past year and a half has taught us anything, it’s that tolerance for sexual assault is slowly eroding. Harvey Weinstein, Michael Orestes, Bill O’Reilly, Larry Nassar, Roger Ailes, Mark Halperin—these are the names of some of the men who have recently come up against this cultural sea change and lost. With the help of social movements like #MeToo, the country is now grappling with the issues of sexual assault and sexual harassment openly and passionately. The current conversation was a long time in the making, though, and it wasn’t without casualties. In fact, in retrospect this watershed moment seems to have taken too long to arrive. As screenwriter Scott Rosenberg, who has written about the fallout from the Weinstein revelations, writes, “Maybe we didn’t know the degree. The magnitude of the awfulness. But we knew something.” The truth is Weinstein and these others got away with their actions for decades because nobody said anything. In these situations, people know, but if nobody says anything, nothing can be done. If a person hears or sees something bad happening and does nothing to stop it, what does that make that person? Part of the problem. We can all do better …
6 Things to Avoid after a Car Accident
If you’ve ever been in a car accident, you know how confusing and chaotic things can get. On the other hand, if you’ve never been in one, you might not know that you are responsible for certain things. Here’s what you should avoid doing after a car accident. Don’t Neglect to Report the Accident Sometimes, a car accident isn’t that serious. Maybe there was only a scratch. Maybe there’s a sizable dent in both cars, but you both agree not to call the police and file a police report because you think it’s a hassle. You’d rather let the insurance take care of it. Here’s why that’s a bad idea. It’s probable that you don’t know a thing about the other driver. Are you sure that they even have insurance? Perhaps they gave you false information, or their policy lapsed, or they don’t have proper coverage. What if they have active arrest warrants? It’s also possible that you or they were injured without realizing it. As many as one in seven people does not have car insurance, and when you get into an accident with them, you’ll be left holding the bill. Not to mention that accident reports can speed …
